About the Event
Calling all new and experienced artists!
Learn, Explore, Create and Express in this full-on, full-day painting workshop designed to bring out the best artist in you!
You will be surrounded by other inspiring artists while working in the newly renovated big bright Maker Workshop at the Arts Centre in Christchurch. This 8-hour workshop includes a morning of learning techniques, followed by gourmet box lunch break in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, before an afternoon of inspiration and creation! The day is led by Canadian Artist/Instructor and GOLDEN Artist Educator, Sandra Iafrate who will focus on offering techniques to elevate your artistic skills level through learning-by-doing and she will guide you in creating unique work which speaks to your individual goals and vision. This workshop welcomes painters of all levels working in any medium or style.

2 Worcester Boulevard

The Maker Workshop is one of the newest spaces in the post-earthquake restored and strengthened School of Art (1877) heritage building. This big bright studio is now used for a broad range of creative endeavours and features modern heating and lighting and includes workbenches, stools, easels and a drying rack.
YOUR DAY AT A GLANCE
9 AM – 12 Noon:
The morning begins with demonstration and explanation of necessary fundamentals of painting while participants follow along. You will learn color mixing techniques, brush stroke techniques and how to compose your paintings in a new and creative manner. This session will include some traditional skills as well as some diverse new acrylic and mixed-media techniques. You will experience creating varied colour palettes and contemporary themes aimed to bring your work to a fresh new level.
12PM - 12:45PM
A gourmet box lunch and refreshments will be generously supplied by Studio 125 Gallery
1PM - 1:45PM
Demonstration: Sandra Iafrate will do a demonstration showing you the steps to creating a thoughtful contemporary representational composition. She will show how to approach creating your composition, followed by underpainting techniques, colour choices and adding different mediums to your work. Demonstration is mainly shown in acrylic, with some instruction on oil painting as well.
2:00PM - 5:00PM
Time to Create! You will compose and paint your painting based on a beautifully lit still life of fresh flowers and foliage provided in the studio. Participants are welcome to bring their own references if desired. Acrylic mediums and basic collage items and papers will also be available for more expressive experimentation. Sandra will spend equal time with each artist guiding them along the way. Your completed piece is the result of the day’s inspiration.
5:00PM -
Artist Talk at the Cellar Door
To complete this workshop, you are invited to the Cellar Door, right across our studio for refreshments and review, and a final art talk presentation. Relax and enjoy a glass of bubbly and take the opportunity to chat, get to know other artists, or ask more questions about some of the processes learned throughout this busy day.
MATERIALS
Participants are to bring their own medium-size canvases (preferably under 24”) and brushes. A suggested material list of minimal supplies will be emailed to participants upon registration.
*Many of the painting mediums and paints will be supplied for some of the learning. Easels are also included. Also be sure to bring a large flat box suitable for transporting your canvas.
Most of the instruction and demonstration will be done with acrylic medium, however people working in all mediums, including oil, watercolour, pastel and other drawing mediums are welcome. A suggested material list is provided.
